Overcoming fire hazards to deliver an engine

Our international airline customer was facing a critical operational challenge. An aircraft engine required for urgent redeployment was immobilised airside at Gatwick due to a significant technical issue.

To transport the engine safely, it needed to be fully heat-wrapped. Normally this would require the use of a heat gun. Heat guns can produce extremely high temperatures and although there isn’t always a visible flame, the fan motors and power switches can create sparks, which are also a serious fire hazard. As a result, the use of heat guns is banned airside at Gatwick, so the engine was unable to be moved.

Our experts went into overdrive to solve this serious issue for our customer. We carried out extensive research to reach a resolution and used our global network of trusted partners to help uncover a specialist who could deliver what we needed.

The Solution

We found a company specialising in wrapping luxury boats for transport. As heat guns can cause damage, the company used infrared technology instead – which isn’t prohibited under Gatwick’s rules. For extra reassurance, the company also had experience wrapping military aircraft for the MOD so we could rely on their work being meticulous.

The Outcome

Upon completion, the engine was immediately shipped to its destination saving our customer from further and more critical financial losses. Our customer was delighted with the result and praised us for our expert and calm management of what was an urgent and critical situation.
